There are many false notions about nannies, especially about those coming from overseas.....i.e.:
- you are NOT sponsoring someone to become a Canadian
- you DO NOT necessarily pay their airfare
- you are NOT committed to keeping them for a specific time, though you are asked to be fair
- you DO NOT have to house a nanny who is no longer working for you
- you DO NOT pay more for a live in nanny
Overseas nannies come here on a very specific work permit "only for nannies". This work permit is to be a nanny "only" and for a period of one year. This permit is "renewable" for a second year provided all conditions are met (employed etc). If the nanny chooses to apply for "landed status", that process is to-date taking close to another year. After that time, your nanny may still remain employed by you if you both agree. However, once your nanny has her landed status and applies further for her Canadian Citizenship, she may live out and work at other jobs.
Overseas nannies are under the Canadian Labour Laws (i.e.: collect employment insurance if unemployed, pay personal income taxes, receive benefits of health care, etc)
SALARIES for nannies start at $8.00 per hour. The cost of a live in nanny is usually around $1,300 per month. The cost of a live out nanny is more because you do not deduct room and board from salary.
